Skincare Secrets: 7 Tips For Glowing Fresh Skin (+ That don’t cost the earth!)

SKIN NEEDLING

This has helped me so much with spot scars on my face and body – even deep scars that generally take time to heal. I’ve seen the quickest results for healing spot scars by using this treatment. It works by rolling a derma roller with fine needles into your skin to cause minor injury which triggers your body’s natural defences to produce new cells, collagen, elastin. This results in a reduction of scars and firmer/smoother skin. For me, the scars almost begin to fade after one intensive use. It takes about 5 minutes and due to the intensity, I do this only once every other week.  I follow up with my trusted Aloe Vera gel to heal and repair my skin.

ALOE VERA GEL

I began to use Aloe Vera Gel on my face and body after seeing a victim of domestic abuse completely heal her horrific scars by solely using this gel. After trying out the product myself, I literally have backups stored of this gel in my house. It’s crazy that I’ve almost gone through 3 tubs of this stuff because I use it every night – face and body. And it works! It does wonder to heal scars, combat dryness and makes your skin smooth and radiant by the morning.

COCONUT OIL

Almost every night I dab a little bit of raw, organic coconut oil on my lashes to strengthen them and keep them moist. I love waking up with fluttery, long eyelashes –  I honestly see the difference between the days that I keep to this ritual versus the days that I miss it.  Also coconut oil is an amazing, multi tasking beauty product. You can use it as part of your homemade toothpaste, hair mask,  the best makeup remover, body moisturiser and incredible for your health too!

RETINOL

If you’ve passed your twentieth birthday, now is the time to start using a retinol serum/eye cream. I’m a huge advocate for the saying ‘prevention is better than cure’. My friends can vouch that even in my late teens, I was singing praises to this statement. Retinol (vitamin A) is a must in your skincare regime. I’ll hand it over to  Alicia Barba, a Miami-based dermatologist who puts it perfectly:

“It’s not that exciting, but retinoids are still the gold standard. They are the one thing that’s actually been proven to treat the skin, to build collagen, but also to reverse photoaging. Pick a mild, over-the-counter retinol product that is not irritating or too exfoliating and start using it every other night, and you can mix a little moisturizer with the retinol to make it more tolerable. The goal should be to start in your late 20s and get used to the effects so that you can work yourself up to prescription-strength retinol by your late 30s or 40s.”

ELECTRONIC BRUSH

Does anyone else feel amazing after thoroughly exfoliating their face? 😀 I highly recommend using any electronic brush on a weekly schedule to deeply exfoliate your skin. All the tight grip and massaging from your hands isn’t even close to the effectiveness of an electronic facial brush. Think about all the activities that you do on a daily basis that congest your skin – heat/smoke from cooking, sweating from the gym, toddler/child touching your face, humidity, accidentally touching your skin without clean hands – that’s why exfoliation is so important. Congested skin = blotchy, oily skin.

CHARCOAL MASK/SUPPLEMENTS/EVERYTHING

Charcoal has been a game changer for my skin and health. Ingesting charcoal supplements everyday after every meal has allowed my body to combat bloating and finally keep my stomach flat through out the day. (Yep, I’ve stocked up on those supplements too!) As a daily cleanser, I use a charcoal based scrub which is amazing! You know when you fall in love with a product and then vouch to never turn your back on it? Yep, it’s one of those products that you keep investing for life. I’ve noticed that the charcoal draws out oil, cleans out my pores and leaves my skin looking super fresh.

MASSAGE YOUR SKINCARE

Deeply massage your cleanser and exfoliator/scrub in to your skin and work along the contours of your face. Spend a minute or two massaging and working the product upwards into your skin. Never drag the skin downwards as you don’t want to cause premature wrinkles and sagging. This one tip alone leaves my skin looking glowy and dewy every morning. (Can you tell how much I love fresh, radiant skin?) This also helps with de-puffing your face and increases blood circulation – hello fresh, innocent, rosy looking skin!

  1. my skin colour is light,I want it lighter and smooth with our blushing creams . Please help me.

  2. Would you recommend anything for blackheads.
Iv tried clean and clear lotions, face washes and other pour strips.

Also what product would you recommend for a flat stomach, as mentioned above?

    Thank you!

    1. Try turmeric paste, it really helps. Mix it with milk (if you don’t have acne), or lemons (if you aren’t sensitive to it), Honey (if it doesn’t cause you breakout) or simply water. Apply the paste and scrub the area you wish you to remove blackheads from and leave it for around 15-20 minutes and then wash while scrubbing gently. It removes them and never lets them come back.

    2. For me personally charcoal tablets after each meal helped with keeping my stomach flat, especially as I used to experience a lot of bloating.

For blackheads, unfortunately I can’t recommend much as I’m not sure which products will help. If anyone else knows, please feel free to comment and share your beauty tips ?
